Hand-poked Sak Yant is applied by hand, without an electric tattoo machine. The pace and physical process differ from machine tattooing, but the tool is only one part of the work. A Sak Yant also requires a considered design, its written elements, placement and the practice connected with its tradition.

I am a tattoo artist in Moscow. I have worked with tattoos since 2009 and spent eight years working in Thailand. Since 2022, I have continued my Sak Yant training in Cambodia, with a focus on the Khmer tradition. I work with both traditional hand-poked and machine techniques, choosing the method for the particular design and session.

Before the tattoo

The work begins with a conversation. I ask what the person is seeking, then consider which design is appropriate, how it is constructed, and where it should be placed. Some designs come from original traditional examples in my collection; others are drawn individually for a person’s request.

The text and structure need attention before anything is transferred to the skin. When a design contains Pali written in Khom Akhara, I check the material I am working from. I do not treat a familiar shape as enough reason to assume that I know what every sign says.

The hand-poked session

Once the design and placement are settled, I transfer the Yant and apply it by hand. The technique has a different rhythm from working with a machine. It calls for steady, deliberate work, especially where the design contains small written elements or closely spaced lines.

Preparation, readings and blessing are also part of the traditional work I have studied. Their details depend on the design and the line of practice. I do not use one fixed ritual description for every Sak Yant.

Does Sak Yant have to be hand-poked?

Hand-poking is an important traditional technique, but the choice of tool does not, by itself, establish the meaning or integrity of a Yant. I also use a tattoo machine when it suits the work. In either case, I pay attention to the design’s source, construction, text and intended purpose.

If you are considering a hand-poked Sak Yant in Moscow, we can begin with your request and discuss the design, placement and method before the session.
