Choosing a Sak Yant often begins with a design that catches your attention. It may be a geometric composition, a figure, or several lines of sacred writing. The appearance matters: you will carry this tattoo on your body. But understanding the design, its tradition, and how it relates to your request is also part of the choice.
In my practice in Moscow, we begin with a conversation. You can come with a particular design in mind or simply explain what brings you to Sak Yant. From there, we discuss the composition, its traditional purpose, and a suitable place on the body.
Start with Your Request
You do not need to know the names of yantras or prepare a detailed explanation before contacting me. Describe what matters to you in your own words.
Some people come with a request connected to protection, confidence, relationships, or a new stage in life. Others feel drawn to a particular figure or want to continue an existing Sak Yant project.
This conversation helps establish a direction. A broad description such as “protection” can refer to different designs and formulas, so it is useful to understand what you mean by it.
During the consultation, we discuss more than the visible image. The writing, formulas, and syllabic combinations within the composition also matter. A short description of a design gives an introduction; a consultation allows us to consider it more closely.
Choose Between a Classical Design and an Individual Composition
There are two approaches, and the choice belongs to the person receiving the tattoo.
The first is to choose an established classical design. These compositions have been used by generations of practitioners and are suitable for many people. Within the tradition, their repeated use and transmission are understood as part of their accumulated strength.
Choosing a classical design does not make the decision less personal. Its purpose, placement, and relationship to your request still need consideration.
The second approach is an individual composition. I can prepare it in advance or draw it freehand on the body, depending on the project.
An individual Sak Yant is built from traditional forms, their construction principles, and the knowledge passed down within a teaching lineage. The composition is developed around your request and the area where it will be tattooed.
You may prefer an established form or want a composition prepared specifically for you. We discuss both approaches before deciding.
Understand the Tradition Behind the Design
My current training and practice follow the Khmer Sak Yant lineage. I have been studying with the Sak Yant Federation in Siem Reap, Cambodia, since 2022, and I return to continue learning.
My path began with the Thai tradition. I still work with a number of established Thai designs, while my practice is gradually moving further towards the Khmer tradition I study.
When we choose a design, I explain which tradition I am working from. Similar shapes or shared elements do not mean that every composition has the same formulas, construction, or interpretation.
For example, the Five Lines, or Ha Taew, and Diamond Armour, or Chat Ped, belong to the Thai line of practice I work with. Chat Ped is often used as an addition to the Five Lines. My Khmer training does not change the origin of those designs.
Consider Size and Placement Together
A Sak Yant needs enough space for its writing and structure. The size should allow the elements to remain clear and the composition to sit naturally on the body.
We consider your anatomy, existing tattoos, and whether you may want to extend the project later. Placement also needs to respect the figures and sacred elements used in the design.
For a larger project, it helps to discuss the overall direction from the beginning. Even when the work is completed in separate sessions, the first composition can be planned with future additions in mind.
You Can Come Without a Finished Decision
You do not have to choose every detail before the consultation.
If you already know which design interests you, tell me its name or describe it. If you are still deciding, explain your request and the area of the body you are considering. If you have existing tattoos nearby, show them so we can take the whole composition into account.
Together, we can discuss the traditional basis, the design approach, size, placement, and the method of tattooing.
Sak Yant Consultation in Moscow
I am Vyacheslav, a tattoo artist working since 2009. After eight years in Thailand, I continued my Sak Yant studies in Cambodia, where I now follow the Khmer lineage.
In Moscow, I work with established authentic designs and individual compositions based on traditional construction. A consultation gives us time to understand your request and choose a direction before preparing the tattoo.
To discuss your Sak Yant, contact me on Telegram at @sak_yant_moscow. Tell me what you are considering, where you would like the tattoo, and whether it will be your first Sak Yant or part of an existing project.
