Chat Ped, or “Diamond Armor,” belongs to the Thai line of Sak Yant. So does Ha Taew, the Five Lines. In my practice, Diamond Armor is most often added to the first Five Lines as part of a larger composition.
How Diamond Armor Complements the Five Lines
Ha Taew forms the foundation of the composition. Chat Ped adds another protective element. When I plan the tattoo, I consider how the two designs work together, where they will be placed and how the finished composition will fit the person’s body.
Diamond Armor is an addition, not a required part of every Five Lines tattoo. It can be planned together with a new Ha Taew or added to an existing one after I examine the tattoo.
An Individual Design or an Authentic Original
I create and draw Sak Yant designs individually for a person’s request. I also work with original, authentic designs from my own collection. In either case, the composition, its text and its placement matter. The name of a yantra alone cannot tell you exactly which formulas are used in a particular tattoo.
During a consultation, we discuss the person’s request and the design that fits it. If Chat Ped is being added to the Five Lines, I plan them as a connected composition rather than treating the addition as a separate decorative shape.
The Thai Line and the Tattooing Technique
Both the Ha Taew and Chat Ped designs described here are part of the Thai line. I keep that distinction clear in my work and do not present this combination as a Khmer design.
Diamond Armor can be tattooed with a machine. The technique is chosen for the work, while the design and its content are prepared within the Thai line.
